- When World War I broke out, women found a new place in the work force as families pulled togehter to economize through rationing food, tires, gasoline, silk and more. Families grew their own food in victory gardens and children saved money to invest in war bonds. Sadly in fear, Japanese Americans were rounded up and impounded in internment camps for the duration of the war. Blacks, struggling to overcome prejudice were accepted into the Marines and Coast Guard for the first time
