- "A series of evolutionary changes has occurred in the Marine Corps Expeditionary Airfield (EAF) system since its inception as a formal operational requirement in 1958. Concurrently, various technological advances have been applied to EAF system components and support operations in an effort to enhance its operational capabilities. These changes have occurred previously in an ad hoc manner without a systematic approach to measure the EAF system as an entity against known requirements and to evaluate the system's capabilities and deficiencies against these requirements. The purpose of the Development of an Operational Concept for the Marine Corps Expeditionary Airfield (EAF) System 1985-1995 study is to examine and analyze the operational requirements of the EAF system and to identify such changes in organization, concept, equipment, and system support requirements as may be necessary to ensure the validity of the concept through the mid-range period (1985-1995)." -- page i
