Summary

Moncure Daniel Conway writes Edmond Beales concerning an antislavery meeting they both attended on May 7, 1863, where Conway, Beales, and Rev. J. Sella Martin addressed the meeting. Conway states that following this meeting, he wrote a letter to the Boston Commonwealth in which he related Martin's labelling President Abraham Lincoln a "negro hater". Conway states that Martin has since declared this to be a "misrepresentation", and relays that Martin had argued that while Lincoln despised slavery, he preferred for African Americans to emigrate elsewhere following emancipation. Conway relays that Martin had further criticized the corruption of the American political system through slavery, to the point of declaring that even an abolitionist would "not treat a negro as an equal". Conway informs Beales that, to his astonishment, Martin has since asserted that he said nothing of the sort concerning the abolitionists and Lincoln's views on African Americans. Conway requests that Beales review his report of the meeting to ensure that there is nothing therein which "does an injustice to Mr. Martin"
