Summary: Abstract: Black households spend less per capita on food at home and food away from home than white households. They spend less on cereal and bakery products, dairy products, fresh fruits and vegetables, processed fruits, sugar and other sweets, fats and oils, nonalcoholic beverages, and miscellaneous prepared foods. They spend more on pork, poultry, fish and seafood, and eggs. The differences reflectlower average incomes in Black households. Given the same income, Black and White households exhibit almost the same differences in their food selections. When earning the same income, Black households spend more on beef, pork, poultry, fish and seafood. Black and White households with equal incomes would increase their food purchases by the same amount if their incomes increased equally. Generally, location of residence (region and urbanization) has little effect on food expenditures in Black and White households
