- In the midst of the Great Fire of Chicago of 1871 a young woman, Lucy Hathaway, finds and rescues a beautiful baby girl from the fire. Lucy raises the child as her own. Five years later Lucy goes to Randolf Higgins, a prominant banker, for a loan for her new bookstore and discovers that the child she has been raising is his. What will happen next?
