Spanning almost 400 years, some 1,600 entries offer profiles of about 1,000 writers, synopses of some 500 literary works, and descriptions of about 75 groups, movements, and periodicals. Entries on writers give significant biographical details and descriptions of the author's career and most important works. Authors profiled include novelists, poets, essayists, and dramatists.
