- " ... Flames and smoke shot from the rocket engines as astronaut John Glenn blasted off aboard 'Friendship 7' on February 20, 1962. Glenn's historic mission brought him fame as the first American in orbit, but not without some unexpected danger. Problems arose which forced Glenn to fly the spacecraft manually, utilizing all his courage and skill to bring 'Friendship 7' home safely. Based on NASA reports and interviews with John Glenn himself, [the] author ... captures the excitement and danger of the flight of 'Friendship 7. This sucessful mission made Glenn an American hero, and paved the way for future space exploration."
