  • Bowyer issued the first prospectus for his illustrated edition of David Hume's History of England in 1792 (see BM). Both the present work and "Exhibition of pictures painted for Bowyer's magnificent edition of the History of England" (1795) contain a section entitled "Sketch of Mr. Bowyer's prospectus" (here on p. 8). In both versions it is stated that fascicles of the History already published are available for inspection. No number of available fascicles is given in the present work, but in the version of 1795 it is stated that eleven had appeared by then. This suggests that the present work appeared between 1792, the date of the first prospectus, and 1795
