  • The authorship of the work was denied by Tonti, who asserted "qu'elle n'étoit point de lui, mais d'un aventurier parisien, qui l'avoit composée sur de mauvais mémoires, & la lui avoit attribuée, pour lui donner cours". See: Charlevois, Histoire ... de la Nouvelle France, tome 2, 1744, page 260. The compiler, however, probably based his narrative on some of Tonti's letters. See: Harrisse, Notes pour servir à l'histoire ... de la Nouvelle-France, 1872, page 169-171; and Margry, Relations et mémoires inédits, 1867, page 1-36
  • Two states of the Paris, 1697 edition were printed. The second state, represented by this copy, has p. 167-168, 171-172, reset and p. 185-188 are on two leaves with p. 185-186 printed in smaller type on the recto and p. 187-188 printed in smaller type on the verso, with the material on pearls being surpressed; the first state has a text of 333 pages, which includes the material referring to pearls on p. 167-168, 171-172, and p. 185-188
  • Signatures: pi2 (pi1 verso blank) A-2E8−4 2F8 2G2 (-2G2)
  • Bookseller's advertisements: p. [16-21], 3rd count
