Note
  • Title is that on spine of binding
  • One of the prints mounted on the 148th leaf bears the engraved date 1727
  • The leaves on which the prints are mounted are of grayish laid paper containing blue fibers. They are watermarked with a small horse, forelegs raised, and countermarked with the outline initials CM. Narrower leaves are tipped onto stubs. An additional, 158th, leaf at the end is blank, with no prints mounted
  • The number of prints mounted on a leaf varies from 1 to 37. They have been cut out at the image boundary, and so lack any legend. (One print on the 52nd leaf retains part of the legend at foot, perhaps Wern... for Friedrich Bernhard Werner, one of Engelbrecht's engravers; see Schott, p. 50.) Internal blank areas are cut away as well. Some prints have additional thin, parallel cuts within the boundary line to suggest grass, cuts at right angles to suggest masonry, etc
  • Subjects include genre, pastoral and gallant scenes, theater including commedia dell'arte, natural history, mythology, costume, and exotic scenes including chinoiserie
  • The merry company depicted in the topmost image on leaf 134 has been painted directly on paper in opaque watercolor. Rather than being cut away, the margin is incised in a lace-like pattern
Extent
1 online resource (157 leaves, the rectos mounted with prints
Note
Binding: red goat skin. Triple fillets in gilt along margins of boards, double fillets on turn-ins, single fillets on edges. Spine gold tooled, with title in 2nd compartment: DECOUPAGE / [fleuron]. Signed in gilt letters at foot of front turn-in: LAURIAT'S-BOSTON. The edges gilt.
