  • Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copy quarterbound in black morocco-grained leather and papier tourniquet over boards (as described by Wolfe in Marbled papers). The front free endpaper contains a lengthy presentation inscription addressed to Benjamin Way, Esq., dated London, 21 January 1774. An ink inscription at the head of the same page reads, "Mitford, 1840; with ms notes by the author." An ink stamp, also at the head of the same page, reads, "Bibliotheca Heberiana." [Library of Richard Heber] There are numerous manuscript notes and other instances of marginalia throughout, presumably all (or primarily) in the hand of the author, as well as a printed dealer's description tipped in at the front. The armorial bookplate of the Barton library is present on the front pastedown, and the perforation stamp of the Boston Public Library is present on the title page.

This volume contains [1]: A supplement to Mr. Warburton's edition of Shakespear [1748] -- [2]: The canons of criticism and glossary, being a supplement to Mr. Warburton's edition of Shakespear [3rd ed.] -- [3]: The canons of criticism and glossary, being a supplement to Mr. Warburton's edition of Shakespear [4th ed.]. Two manuscript indexes, also in the author's own hand, are bound in at the end. The first of the two is a simple index to vols. 3 and 4 of Canons of criticism. The second correlates the content of the Warburton and Theobald editions of Shakespeare to Canons of criticism. See the Catalog of the Barton Collection for a more detailed description.
